I like that. I was just thinking if I could catch a small black nose again I’d put him in my aquarium. What do you feed those guys? I think Slab said before that worms weren’t as messy as minnows.![]()
this might lead to one of them there hybrid crappie things , maybe![]()

What size aquarium? I’ve wondered what it would be like to have crappie instead of a community of small fish in my 55 gallon freshwater aquarium.
Just brought some home to put in my aquarium. We’ll see how it goes. Two black nose crappie.

I was reading up on this, and it seems that an 80 gallon or larger tank is necessary. Water changes every two weeks on a 55 is bad enough; had I known that I was going to get an aquarium when I built the house, I would have plumbed the RODI and drain at the aquarium, too.

Depends on fish size really and if you are in it for the long haul with the crappie or just a year or two. I used to have a 55 with 2 crappie, 5 bluegill, and a bullhead. The crappie were probably 8" maybe and the bluegill about 7". I did weekly 20% water changes like i always did with my tanks, and had a 100gal canister bio/mechanical feeder setup. These freshwater natives put out a ton of waste, a good filter is incredibly important even at 80gal. With just crappie you can do native plants too which help, my bullhead would uproot them all the time so i just had floaters. 20% of 55gal is 10 gal (or so) so just two bucket trips to the garden, it was my friday night exercise. But look into the battery operated water pumps these days, you can run a 1/2" hose right out the front door and pump the tank down in seconds.
I dont think I could do it again though, id want a 150gal or so and it would have to be on the concrete basement floor which wouldn't be fun.

to run an aquarium properly you need to have deep gravel bed and serious powerhead , no matter the size of the aquarium it seems to me , been doing this for around 50 years now , salt and fresh and it is all about the inches of fish per gallon , you might stretch the limit a tiny bit with a separate filter of some kind , but oxygen and ammonia become a serious issue if not baby sat .....
got 8 inches of crappie in 8 gallons of water here , they are happy as can be , no external filter, no air pump .....
it is an inch per gallon on fresh and about 1 inch per 3 gallons salt ......
a 55 fresh would be perfect for a pretty solid number of smaller fresh water fish if set up right .....
we do NOT run separate aeration either ....
and our water clarity is like air ,,,,,
might need to in some cases , but most of the time nope ....and...
if you are "cleaning" an aquarium , it AIN'T set up right .....
we might scrub off the glass once or twice a year if algae forms on it .....
we might do a half water change once a year as well if it seems like we need to ,,....
just saying![]()
