    Default ?? Oxygenator killing minnows

Went Friday around 4:30 to get minnows for Saturday. Got 10 dozen in my 6 gal bucket. Put around 5 gal of water in it. I had bought an oxygenator system from keepfishalive.com a couple weeks ago that I thought would work to make fish more lively. This is what it looks in a bowl of water. So I hooked it up in my bucket on low and also used the mr bubbles 12v bubbler . Came back two hrs later and found bubbles coming out of the lid like this.

Thought man they are sure going to be lively. Boy was I wrong. All of them dead!

So I emptied them out and went to a different minnow place and got more. Didn't try it again on the new ones.

In Saturday I guess I didn't learn my lesson so I tried the oxygenator in Simplemans minnow bucket. Kept an eye on them and after about an hour they started swimming towards the top. Took oxygenator out and started up the bubbler. Within 30 min killed around 6 dozen. Both buckets the water was very cool.

My 6 gal bucket kept 10 dozen all day Saturday with maybe 6-8 dying. Simpleman bucket and my bucket will keep them for a few days. I have had as many as 20 dozen in the winter and they stay alive fine.

Anyone have one of these. Or maybe some of you scientists have an explanation. I know what chief will say. " My jigs never die" lol

What's the difference in the 6 gallon bucket I ran the bubbler all day and lost only 3-4 minnows out of 10 dozen? Lid off the bucket all day in 102 air. His minnows were struggling within an hour.

I kept the 6 gallon in my boat and lost a few all day long.

He had a bucket full of lively little minnows when I handed the bucket back over the side of Simplemans boat. That bucket is the ticket, that oxygenator now is a different story.

I agree 100%. The warmer the water gets the less oxygen it will hold in saturation. I don't use my bubbles box if the outside temp is above 70 F. When the temp is above 70F I use block ice to keep the water cool. I also use plastic pop bottles to freeze water. If I need to keep the minnows overnight I will bring them inside to the air conditioning and put a couple of 20oz frozen water bottles in the cooler with them. The ice will melt slower this way and the water won't mix with the minnow water. I live in town so the water has clorine in it.
I feel your pain but I have learned from working and selling minnows, it is hard to keep them alive in hot weather. Cool water is the answer.

The water was cold. Even put a frozen bottle in it Saturday . This oxygenator doesn't have an outside bottle. So it don't pump water. It is supposed to break down the hydrogen and oxygen and emit just pure O2. Here are a couple picts.
