A Real Fishing Buddy | A good friend of mine Buddy has a golden retriever named Jessie that is now 17 years old. Buddy loves to take Jessie everywhere with him. Buddy also loves crappie fishing and often fishes several tournaments each year. Many times while pre-fishing a tournament it will just be Buddy and Jessie in the boat. For those of you not familiar with Crappie fishing or pre-tournament fishing, you normally troll trying to locate large groups of fish and preferably the larger fish and mark them on your map for later fishing during the tournament. You are constantly moving, never wanting to catch too many fish in any one spot. Buddy’s boat has 4 poles on each side up front and 6 poles across the back of the boat. It has an auto pilot trolling motor which can be controlled from anywhere in the boat, and will maintain speed, and adjust the boat’s course to compensate for wind or current allowing you to walk around and take fish off the hook while still trolling. Buddy is quite a character and has a great sense of humor, so with him sitting in the back of the boat and Jessie sitting up front chest puffed out with eight poles and watching everything like he knows exactly what he is doing, Buddy can’t resist every time they get near another boat talking to Jessie like he is the one navigating the boat. Buddy always maintains a fantastic poker face and says, “Jessie swing the boat around that point right there boy,” or “go a little closer to the bank on your next pass boy.” Of course Buddy is controlling the boat from the back the whole time, but to onlookers it would appear Jessie was in full control. Buddy laughs and says, “You should see the looks we get!” One misting rain foggy day Buddy and Jessie get back to the dock and tie up the boat. They go get in the truck to back the trailer down to load the boat. Buddy couldn’t see out of the wet fogged up rear window so he rolled his door window down halfway so he could see to back the trailer down the ramp in the water. He then left Jessie in the truck with the engine running and the emergency brake on, and got in the boat to drive it up on the trailer. As he pulled away from the dock and was making a loop to come up straight on the trailer another boat pulled up to the dock with a couple of men in it. Jessie couldn’t see Buddy so he got in the driver’s seat and stuck his head out the window looking back at him. Of course Buddy couldn’t pass up the opportunity so he yells, “Okay Jessie…That’s far enough, hold it right there boy, yeah that’s perfect. Don’t pull off till I get the motor tilted up and the boat hooked to the trailer now boy!” Both men are watching intently with mouths hanging open wide and one finally squeals, “Man I wish my wife was here to see this …I’ve been trying to teach her how to back a boat-trailer for over ten years!” Buddy just smiles ear to ear. | | Thanks for the story Russ
