John on Crappie Fishing
Written by John
Crappie are, in my opinion, one of the most fun fish to catch and certainly one of the best tasting fish. They swim in large schools and are found throughout most of the U.S. and into Canada. Crappie prefer fairly warm water and are normally found in nearly all types of cover. They average 6-11" fully grown, however with enough food and cover they can reach lengths up to 17". A large crappie is referred to as a "Slab". In most waters, crappie with a weight of 1/2 to 1 pound are considered good fish. In other waters, crappie are not considered large until they hit the 1 1/2 or 2 pound mark. They can, under ideal circumstances, reach weights of up to 6 pounds.

In Search of Sunfish
Written by Matt Johnson

Both Northern Minnesota and Southern Minnesota lakes have the potential of growing pound-plus sunfish. Many Northern lakes that are "untapped" will see some excellent large sunfish populations. However, these populations can fluctuate and produce trophy sunfish one year and not produce any the next. Some lakes will experience year classes of stunted sunfish, and sometimes the effects seem to be irreversible. So just how do Northern areas compare to Southern areas when looking to land a trophy sunfish…

Many lakes that once produced big sunfish might now find themselves falling short because of over harvesting, biological factors, or environmental factors, especially in the smaller lakes. The larger Northern lakes seem to withstand some of the negative variables that are thrown at them; however, larger lakes also need attention in order to preserve the trophy fish. So, with that being said, if you can pinpoint those big sunfish on larger Northern MN lakes your chance of hooking into a trophy is there.

What to do in this heat!
Written by ed moes

or CrappiePappy's summertime advice.

"Now, the weather forcasted is high of 91 Friday, 88 Saturday, and 89 Sunday. We're hoping to get on some gills so we can have some supper that night with the fish we catch, but with temperatures this hot I think it might be a challenge. Any and all panfish is what we'll be going for, weather it be Crappie, Blue Gill, Sunnies, etc. Just curious about what depths we should be looking at setting the bobbers at. We'll be mostly fishing with worms and maybe some minnows, but I'll have my "green carp" (bass) lures on one of my poles."  member  Sailor Jerry

CrappiePappy says:   I'd be getting some crickets and dropping them down any of the real deep points or cliff banks ....
